Array signal processing – in the application of personal sound zones and headphone-free 3D audio

During his studies, Xiaohui Ma investigated the impact of nonlinear distortion on personal sound zones, which deliver interference-free audio to multiple listeners. Xiaohui’s research answered important questions about the physical limitations of achievable energy separation between zones, and proposed method to reduce the impact on nonlinear distortion. In addition, Xiaohui also investigated headphone-free 3D audio for moving listeners, which showed superior results compared to existing approaches.

The new findings contribute to the understanding of how the loudspeaker’s physical properties affect the established sound zones, and contribute to a new home theatre application.

The PhD degree was completed at the Department of Engineering, Aarhus University and Dyanudio A/S.
