Inspired by the Blue Mussel: Modulation of Protein Materials by Metal Ions

Amanda Andersen

During her studies, Amanda Andersen developed several soft material designs inspired by the blue mussel byssus threads. These materials possess adhesive and self-healing properties through advanced, biomimetic synergistic effects achieved by incorporation of special amino acids and specific interactions with metal ions.

The resulting materials and the studies hereof offer insight to the remarkable properties of these multifunctional biological materials and provide a material platform for applications in several and diverse areas including biomedical devices and purification of wastewater.

The PhD degree was completed at the Interdisciplinary Nanoscience Center (iNANO), Science and Technology, Aarhus University.
