Oral delivery of Satiety-enhancing ingredients - Exploring new ways to fight against overweight and obesity

During her studies, Essi Taipaleenmäki researched nano- and microparticle formulations for the oral delivery of satiety-enhancing ingredients as a novel way to reduce the excessive dietary intake associated with overweight and obesity. Oral delivery of certain drugs and bioactive compounds remains challenging due to many biological and chemical obstacles along the oral route. These include the acidic conditions of the stomach and a viscous mucus gel that covers the intestinal epithelium. The purpose of the mucus layer is to protect the body from pathogens but at the same time, it hinders the adsorption of nanocarriers. Essi studied various nanoparticle designs focusing on their ability to penetrate through the mucus layer while acting as carriers for a novel satiety-enhancing compound. In addition, the encapsulation of nanocarriers into larger microparticles for enhanced protection and retention in the mucus layer was studied.

The new research findings contribute to the understanding of nano- and microparticle interactions with mucus and offer new tools to control the food intake in the treatment of overweight and obesity.

The PhD degree was completed at the Interdisciplinary Nanoscience Center (iNANO), Science and Technology, Aarhus University.
