Protein aggregation in relation to Parkinson’s disease

During her PhD studies, Camilla Bertel Andersen researched the protein alpha-synuclein which is involved in Parkinson’s disease. In Parkinson’s disease the alpha-synuclein is found to form toxic aggregates. Camilla Bertel Andersen studied how alpha-synuclein aggregation is inhibited by small molecules and how it self associates into oligomers in the presence of two different products of lipid oxidation. The oligomer was finally studied inside live cells with NMR.

The new research findings contribute to the understanding of how the alpha-synuclein oligomer contributes to neuron death in Parkinson’s disease.

The PhD degree was completed at the Interdisciplinary Nanoscience Center (iNANO), Science and Technology, Aarhus University.
