Objectives of the course:

Discuss and reflect contemporary issues on organic micropollutants in Urban water systems including laboratory exercises in determining removal with HPLC-MS/MS


Learning outcomes and competences:

At the end of the course, the student should be able to:

- reflect own research to cutting edge input

- an understanding on the most recent advances in research on removing pollutants form water

- conduct and plan experiments concerning organic micropollutants in urban water systems

- basic HPLC-MS operation understanding

- basic understanding and working experience on relevant reactors and processes


Compulsory programme:

Active participation including one presentation on own research (research presentation max 40 mins)


Course contents:

Recent research on organic micro-pollutants in urban water cycles e.g.:

·         Removal of pharmaceuticals with biofilm and sludge reactors

·         Transformation reactions in biofilms and soils

·         Photodegradation reactions

·         Ozonation reactions and parameters controlling them

·         Partitioning of compounds

·         Uptake and degradation of organic compounds in plants and animals
